Winter Sun in Mallorca

Well, if you’re thinking of coming to Mallorca for some winter sun, you might want to wait until the Siberian cold snap which is upon us at the moment heads its way back to …. well, Siberia I suppose.

I have been living in Mallorca since 1984 so one could say that I have seen a winter or two here.  I do remember that we used to get more cold weather way back then than more recently and the same could be said for the rest of Europe.  For those who don’t know, I am Dutch by birth and in Holland we used to get much more freezing temperatures back then too … you could usually tell the quality of a winter by whether or not the Elfstedentocht was held.

Well, whereas just over a week ago we were basking in mild temperatures, winter was very much upon us this weekend. Something like this has not been seen for at least 40 years by all accounts.  I have seen snow at sea level here before, but never in my time has it actually stayed, always melting at first daylight.  Saturday however, saw the beach covered in white and where we are more accustomed to building a sand castle or two, more than a few snowmen appeared.

Below are just a few images of spectacular snowscapes that we witnessed in Mallorca this weekend, I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them and playing in the snow with my family.
